Who Will Take the Crown: Crowning Champions Event Planned for May 3rd

The summer sports season is set to kick off downtown on May 3rd as the Winchester Downtown Program and the Future Leaders of Winchester host their annual event, Crowning Champions.
The event starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and will last until each tournament has crowned their champion. Activities for the event will be located on the paved parking lot next to Jefferson’s, which was generously donated for use by Fernando Santistabon.
Growing bigger from last year’s event, Downtown Summer Kick Off, this year the Crowning Champions event will add pickle ball, face painting and a beauty pageant, in addition to the three-on three basketball and soccer tournaments.
Age brackets for the events include elementary, middle school and high school. Participants can sign up online by going to the Downtown Winchester Program’s Facebook page, or they will have the opportunity to sign up the day of the event. The sign-up sheet will open at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and will close promptly at 9:00 a.m. as the event kicks off. All events are free to the public and participants.
The Future Leaders of Winchester is a group of high school juniors from Huntland High School, Winchester Christian Academy, and Franklin County High School. The group was created to get the students involved in the community and they are assigned with picking an activity for the event. Last year, the students chose the sporting events. This year they wanted to stay with the same theme, along with choosing to add the new events.
Project Graduation is sponsoring the beauty pageant, which will be held on the Kiwanis stage and music will be provided by DJ Johnny Hand on the same stage throughout the day. Huntland Interact will be providing the face painting.
