The Benefits of Direct Access to Physical Therapy

Did you know that in many cases, you can start physical therapy without first seeing a  physician? This is called Direct Access, and it allows patients to receive care sooner,  often leading to faster relief and better outcomes.

What Is Direct Access?

Direct access means you can schedule an evaluation with a Doctor of Physical Therapy  (DPT) without a physician referral. At Inspired Physiotherapy, our Physical Therapists are  trained to assess movement, identify contributing factors to pain or dysfunction, and begin  treatment right away. Part of our education is being able to screen patients for red flags  that would necessitate seeing another expert, prior to attending physical therapy.

Why Direct Access Matters

Start care sooner: Avoiding waiting for multiple appointments prior to attending PT

Faster recovery: Early intervention often prevents symptoms from worsening.

Lower costs: Fewer appointments and reduced need for imaging or medication.

Expert movement assessment: Doctors of Physical Therapy specialize in  evaluating musculoskeletal pain and movement-related conditions.

What About Insurance?

Most private insurance plans allow direct access to physical therapy. However, federal  insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal programs, do require  a physician referral for physical therapy services to be covered.

If you’re unsure about your coverage, our team at Inspired Physiotherapy is happy to help  guide you through the process.

Is Direct Access Right for You?

Direct access is appropriate for many conditions, including:

•Back or neck pain

•Joint pain or stiffness

•Pelvic floor concerns

•Sports injuries

•Postural or movement-related discomfort

•And many more

If your condition is outside the scope of physical therapy, your Doctor of Physical Therapy  will help guide you to the appropriate medical provider.

At Inspired Physiotherapy, our goal is to make care simple, accessible, and effective,  so you can get the care you need without unnecessary delays.
