Escaped zebra found in Tennessee field after week-long search involving drones and highway closures

Animal had been roaming free since escaping owner's property, briefly stopping traffic on major interstate

Christiana, Tennessee – A zebra that captured headlines after escaping its owner's property and disrupting traffic on a major Tennessee highway has been located following an extensive search operation.

The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office deployed drone technology to spot the animal early Friday morning in a field near Christiana, nearly a week after it first went missing.

The zebra's adventure began Saturday, May 31, when residents reported the exotic animal trotting through local neighborhoods. The situation escalated when the zebra wandered onto Interstate 24, forcing deputies to temporarily shut down lanes in both directions as the animal crossed the busy highway.

The unusual incident created a surreal scene for Tennessee motorists, who found themselves at a standstill as law enforcement worked to ensure both public safety and the animal's welfare.

Now that the zebra has been located, authorities face the delicate task of safely capturing the animal. The sheriff's office is coordinating with the zebra's owner and a veterinarian to develop a careful approach that won't further stress or endanger the animal.

Officials are urging residents to stay away from the area where the zebra was spotted, warning that human presence could spook the animal and complicate rescue efforts.

The case highlights the challenges law enforcement faces when exotic animals escape their designated habitats, particularly in areas where such incidents are rare.

The zebra's week-long journey through middle Tennessee comes to a close as authorities work to ensure its safe return home.
