USDA Seeks Rural Leaders for Key Agricultural Decision-Making Roles

Federal agency opens nominations for farm committee positions that influence local program implementation

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Tennessee — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has launched its search for agricultural leaders willing to take on influential roles in shaping federal farm policy at the local level.

The agency announced that nominations are now open for the 2025 Farm Service Agency county committee elections, with Franklin County's Local Administrative Area #2 among the positions available. This particular seat represents a significant portion of north Franklin County, including the communities of Estill Springs and Decherd.

These committee positions carry substantial responsibility in determining how federal agricultural programs reach farming communities. Members influence the distribution of disaster aid, oversee conservation funding allocation, and help implement crop price support mechanisms that can make or break local agricultural operations.

The USDA characterizes these committee members as essential ground-level decision-makers who bridge the gap between federal policy and local agricultural needs. The department has emphasized its commitment to expanding representation and bringing more diverse perspectives to these critical roles.

Eligibility for nomination extends to any local producer who participates in USDA programs, regardless of whether they have directly received federal benefits. This broad qualification standard opens the door for a wide range of agricultural stakeholders to contribute their expertise and perspective.

The nomination window closes on August 1, 2025, giving interested candidates several months to consider their participation and complete the necessary paperwork.

Currently, more than 7,700 farmers across the nation serve in these committee positions, representing a vast network of agricultural expertise that helps guide federal program implementation at the community level.

Prospective candidates and those interested in learning more about their local administrative areas can access nomination forms and additional information through the FSA's dedicated elections website at fsa.usda.gov/elections.
