Gregg Wooten has officially taken the reins as the new head coach of the Huntland High School boys basketball team. His introduction to the community on Tuesday marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Hornets.

Wooten’s basketball career began at Briarcrest High School in Memphis, where he played a key role in leading the team to a state championship. From there, he went on to play college basketball at Samford University. After his playing days, Wooten transitioned into coaching, where he most recently spent three successful seasons at Buckhorn High School in Alabama. During his time there, the team won two state championships.

When discussing his vision for the Huntland program, Wooten highlighted the significance of developing players not only as athletes but as individuals.

“My goal is to see growth. I want to establish a culture of excellence, both on the court and in the classroom. Ultimately, I’m focused on helping build young men of strong character,” Wooten said.

Wooten’s leadership style is rooted in his own experience as a player, particularly his time as a point guard.

“I played point guard for pretty much my whole life, so leadership has kind of been instilled in me for a long time,” he explained. “Coaching, I knew, was going to be a part of my life once I got done playing basketball. I was a tough, hard-nosed defender and a leader that led by example, and those are a lot of the traits that kind of followed me into my coaching career.”

Wooten’s family life also factored into his decision to join the Huntland community. With a wife and two kids, he was drawn to the small, tight-knit town.

“I know it’s a small, tight-knit community, a family community. That’s something that I’m big on as well with being a family man,” he said.

Another key element Wooten values is his players' success in the classroom. He made it clear that academics will always come first.

Huntland Athletic Director Bob Robertson praised Wooten’s experience as a major asset in the search for a new coach. After a difficult season last year, Robertson is hopeful that Wooten’s leadership will bring about a fresh start for the Hornets.

“Hopefully, we can put a product on the floor that they’re going to be happy with to come out, watch and support every year,” Wooten said. “Hopefully, we make some big noise this upcoming season and moving forward.”
