Noting it as one of the highlights of his career, Franklin County Sheriff Tim Fuller recently visited the White House, taking the opportunity to have a meeting with President Donald Trump, United States Attorney General Pam Bondi, and President Trump’s executive staff.
Fuller has been on the Executive Committee of National Sheriffs Association for two years and attended the customary meeting to address concerns and issues among the sheriffs at a national level.
Two predominant takeaways from the meeting included addressing the mental health issues among involuntary committal individuals and the current jail inmate population, and the concerns the sheriffs have with orders they have received from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding free phone services for jail inmates.
Fuller said that, typically, 40-45% of the Franklin County jail population has mental health issues, which can tend to change the dynamic of the facility. And the FCC has released an order that jail inmates are to be provided with free phone services, which the sheriffs are opposed to.
Fuller also stated that the policies that have been put in place by the Trump Administration regarding the border crisis have helped tremendously in terms of drugs and fentanyl.
“What he’s done with the border has helped us tremendously.”, stated Fuller. “The influence of fentanyl has been catastrophic for all of us with the drug overdoses and deaths. But his order he put down with the border situation has helped us tremendously from the perspective of drugs, alone.”
Referring to trip as a great experience, the sheriff stated that he felt as though the meeting was a productive one and expressed hopes of getting to meet with the president again in the future.
