The Franklin County School Board is considering a plan to include a 3.5% raise for all school system employees as part of the proposed 2025-26 budget.
During a special meeting held April 8, board members reviewed the district’s $57.68 million spending plan. While the initial recommendation called for a 3.5% raise for certified staff and a 2.5% increase for classified workers, the board ultimately agreed to apply the same percentage increase across the board. Board Member Sara Liechty pushed for the change, pointing out that classified employees typically earn less and should receive the same percentage boost as higher-paid staff to ensure fairness.
To balance the budget, the district plans to draw $1.678 million from its reserve fund. Even after that withdrawal, the system would maintain an $8.3 million undesignated fund balance to cushion against future financial shortfalls.
Board members also discussed the idea of creating a full-time public relations position for the school system. Jenny Phillips, the county’s deputy finance director, was asked to look into whether the budget could support approximately $100,000 for salary and benefits. After further consideration, the board opted to assign the responsibilities to an existing staff member as part of their current role, rather than creating a new position.
The board is expected to vote on the final version of the budget in May. Once approved, the plan will be submitted to the County Commission for inclusion in the county's overall financial package. Last year, the total county budget was $112.3 million, with the school system receiving $56.4 million of that amount.
