Whitwell, Decherd Receive State Funding for Parks and Recreation Projects

State Rep. Iris Rudder, R-Winchester, has announced that two local communities will share $175,000 in state grant funding to support parks and recreation initiatives.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) will distribute the funds through two programs included in the 2025-26 state budget: the Local Parks and Recreation Fund (LPRF) and the Tennessee Recreation Initiative Program (TRIP).

Whitwell will receive $125,000 from the LPRF to enhance Whitwell City Park. Planned improvements include resurfacing the tennis courts, upgrading seating, and installing new basketball goals and fencing.

Decherd has been awarded $50,000 through TRIP to establish a new Parks and Recreation Department. The funding will help the town hire its first department director and begin building recreational services for residents.

“From park improvements in Whitwell to helping Decherd launch a new department, these investments will support healthier, more connected communities,” Rudder said. “I’m grateful to TDEC for their support and proud of our local leaders for their continued commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.”

The LPRF provides matching funds to assist local governments with recreation projects and land purchases for parks, greenways, and other facilities. TRIP offers resources to help cities and counties create and grow parks and recreation departments.

More information about both programs is available through TDEC’s Office of Outdoor Recreation at tn.gov/environment/outdoorrec.html
