Athen Thomas Bean Jr, age 86, went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Highpoint Health in Winchester. Jr., as he is known to most, was born on July 29, 1938, in Huntland, to the late Athen Thomas and Mamie Bean Sr. He was raised in Winchester and was the eldest of ten children. Jr. graduated from Townsend School and joined the Navy in 1955. The military life led him to Oakland, California where he married and had three sons, Francis, Joseph, and Darryl. In 1962, Jr. came home to Tennessee and married the late Annie Brannon-Bean. Jr. and Annie had nine children, James, Deborah, Beverly, Teresa (Punkin), Jimmie, Annette, Joy, Don, and Athen III. Upon moving back, he worked for Franklin County Golf Course and Dixie Tire Service. Jr was baptized on April 6, 1997, at the Old Cowan Road Church of Christ. In 1998, he married Barbara Vanzant-Bean and added Sonya, Stephanie and Alisa to his list of children. He then transferred his church membership to The House of Prayer in Decherd, where he was a faithful member until his health began to fail. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, cooking, watching golf and tennis, and would always be willing to lend a mechanic’s helping hand. The time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, he treasured the most. Jr will be remembered by his family as a gentle giant who always got the last word spoken. In addition to his parents, Jr. is preceded in death by his children, Deborah Taylor, Don Bean, Athen Bean III, Joy Bean, and Joseph Bean; grandchildren, Saniya Bean and Johnny Taylor Jr.; siblings, Herman Bean, Donal Bean, Wilbert Bean, and Bonnie Rowe. Jr is survived by his wife of twenty seven years, Barbara Bean; children, James (Cynthia) Kincherlow, Beverly Wilkerson, Punkin (Victor) Carden, Jimmie (Tony) Taylor, Annette (Scott) Mosley; bonus children, Sonya (Lyn) Taylor, Stephanie (Kenny) Dedrick, and Alisa Russell; thirty nine grandchildren, thirty four great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; siblings, George (Anna) Bean, Robert (Rita) Bean, Larry Bean, Walter Bean, and Mark (Karen) Bean; mother-in-law, Juanita Vanzant; brother-in-law, Cecil Brannon; and many nieces and nephews.
