WINCHESTER, TN – Visitors to Winchester City Park can expect temporary closures of the park’s boat ramps and docks as construction begins on planned upgrades through the Bill Dance Signature Lakes program, an initiative of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. The Mayor’s Office announced that the closures will take place from January 12 through March 31.
City officials say the improvements are part of a broader effort to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and long-term accessibility at Winchester City Park. The construction work will be limited strictly to the boat ramp area, and the remainder of the park will remain open to the public during the project.
According to the Mayor’s Office, the timing of the work was selected intentionally to minimize disruption. The project is scheduled during a period when water levels are typically at their lowest, allowing crews to complete the upgrades more efficiently. Officials also confirmed there are no plans to coordinate with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) regarding water levels as part of this project.
The Bill Dance Signature Lakes program focuses on improving fishing access, boat ramp infrastructure, and recreational amenities across Tennessee, helping communities attract visitors while supporting local outdoor economies. City leaders say the upgrades at Winchester City Park will improve safety and usability for boaters once construction is complete.
Residents and visitors are asked to plan accordingly during the closure period and to respect posted signage and construction areas to ensure the project can move forward safely and on schedule.
City officials thanked the public for their patience and understanding as the improvements are made, noting that the temporary inconvenience will lead to long-term benefits for park users and the community as a whole.
